San Ramon Valley Unified School District Sued Over Sexual Assault of a High School Student

Cerri, Boskovich & Allard Sues San Ramon Valley Unified School District Over Sexual Assault of a High School Student

PLEASANTON, CA --- February 23, 2024 --- The law firm of Cerri, Boskovich & Allard announces the filing of a lawsuit against the San Ramon Valley Unified School District (Contra Costa County Superior Court) because of alleged childhood sexual abuse of a student by Theatre Arts teacher Ryan Weible. The lawsuit alleges that much of the abuse took place on the San Ramon Valley High School campus during the 2010-2011 school year.

Despite receiving numerous concerns as early as the 2010-2011 school year about Weible’s improper relationship with the student, a review of school records obtained through a California Public Records Act request shows no evidence that the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), as required by law, was notified by the District.

The failure to notify CTC of suspected childhood sexual abuse resulted in Weible maintaining his teaching credential.  Combined with the District’s failure to notify anyone about the danger he posed to children, Weible was free to secure one position after another where he had access to minors, culminating in him now serving as Assistant Head of School at a prestigious Bay Area K-12 private school.

The lawsuit claims that the student, Jane Doe, was sexually abused on school grounds in the theatre room, the “green room”, Weible’s office, as well as on a District-sponsored trip to New York City.

In charging the District with negligently supervising Weible, it is alleged that the District knew of Weible’s highly inappropriate grooming behavior. Such behavior included giving side hugs and frontal hugs to minor females on school grounds, inviting female students to spend time in his office alone, giving hand massages to female students, having minor female students sit on his lap in his classroom and/or the theatre room, and making inappropriate and/or sexual comments to minor female students.

“The District had a duty to supervise Jane Doe and to protect her from potential dangers while on school grounds and to report any reasonable suspicion of child abuse to the CTC, law enforcement and/or child protective services,” attorney Robert Allard said.

This is not the first childhood sexual abuse lawsuit filed by Cerri, Boskovich & Allard against the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. In 2019, the District settled a case involving former wrestling coach Kevin Lopez. In that case, the District was also charged with failing to notify authorities about Lopez' suspected abuse.
