Misconduct Cases
Abuse and Sexual Assault
Jane Doe chose the law firm of Cerri, Boskovich & Allard to hold Los Gatos High School accountable for turning a blind eye to the abuse perpetuated upon her by track coach Chioke Robinson. The Los Gatos Saratoga Union High School District settled the lawsuit for $3.485 million.
Coming to Los Gatos High School with Big Dreams
Jane Doe dreamed of becoming an Olympic athlete, and was well on her way there, distinguishing herself as a promising young track star. In 1998, she started attending Los Gatos High School, where track coach Chioke “Chi” Robinson, began showing her special attention. He gave her rides home and spent extra time with her, all signs of sexual grooming. Within the year, he began sexually abusing her.
Despite sexually explicit letters written by Robinson to Jane Doe, a recovered pregnancy test, eye witnesses, and a mountain of evidence, Los Gatos Saratoga Union High School District allowed Robinson to continue coaching minor female athletes at Los Gatos High School.
As a result, Robinson continued to abuse Jane Doe for years, both on and off school grounds. In 2001, Principal McCulloch asked Robinson not to return as coach due to numerous other allegations of inappropriate behavior and misconduct However, the school did nothing to prevent him from being hired and abusing students at another school district. This practice by the school is known as “passing the trash.”
Years of sexual abuse transformed the once goal-oriented student-athlete into a confused teenager who was now in trouble academically. “My dreams of running collegiately, or even going to college, were shattered. My high school turned a blind eye to my sexual predator, which led me down a path of self-destruction. Those red flags that were overlooked and swept under the rug by my high school followed me throughout the next two decades.”
Seeking Justice and Healing
Like many sexual abuse survivors, going through the legal process seemed scary and intimidating for Jane Doe. It can be traumatic to relive the sexual trauma you endured, especially after decades of silence. However, Jane Doe wants other survivors to know that they, too, are strong enough to fight back.
“Just do it,” Jane Doe states. “I feel like many survivors are content with staying silent and pushing through life the best they can. To let someone else fight for you is a new concept— one that you deserve. You deserve someone to fight for you; so let them. Tell your story and remove any complacency from those who have no business being complacent.”
Was it worth it? According to Jane Doe, it was. “What happened to me needed to be addressed. I missed out on such an important part of my life, while the school district had no qualms. You don’t get to push kids under the rug. I’m glad I was given an opportunity to address my broken life.”
